Railay & Phra Nang Cave Beach – limestone, caves and sunsets

4 min readUpdated:

Railay is a peninsula that feels like an island: high limestone walls cut it off from the mainland, there are no roads, and you can only get there by boat. Many consider the small Phra Nang beach with its cave the most beautiful beach in Krabi. Railay is also a world-class climbing area and one of the best places for sunset. This guide shows you how to enjoy Railay and Phra Nang Cave Beach at a relaxed pace.

Railay West, Railay East and Phra Nang

Railay is made up of several beaches. Railay West is the wide sandy beach facing the open sea and the arrival point for many boats from Ao Nang. Railay East is more of a mangrove shore with a pier where you cannot swim at low tide. The two are connected by a few minutes’ walk.

At the southern end lies Phra Nang Beach, framed by overhanging cliffs. A footpath along the rocks leads there from Railay East, or boats land directly on the beach. The beach is small, the water calm and the backdrop of cliffs and offshore islands spectacular.

Phra Nang Cave and its legend

At the foot of the cliff on Phra Nang Beach lies a small cave dedicated to the sea princess Phra Nang. Fishermen traditionally bring her offerings for a safe catch and good weather. The cave is best known for the many carved wooden phallus symbols left there as fertility offerings.

For visitors the cave is a curious but sincere place. Taking photos is common, but the rule is: touch nothing, take nothing and stay respectful.

The viewpoint and Phra Nang Lagoon

Between Railay East and Phra Nang a steep trail starts up to the viewpoint and on down to the hidden lagoon of Sa Phra Nang. Parts of the trail are a scramble on ropes over smooth, often slippery rock. The viewpoint is manageable for sure-footed hikers; the descent to the lagoon is considerably more demanding.

The trail is not recommended for families with small children or after rain. Sturdy shoes make sense – flip-flops are out of place here.

The best time for Railay and Phra Nang

Phra Nang Cave Beach is a fixed stop on many 4 Islands tours and fills up from late morning. Early in the morning the beach is almost empty and the light falls beautifully on the cliffs. Late afternoon is also more relaxed.

Sunset is best enjoyed from Railay West or right from the boat offshore. From the water you watch the cliffs glow in the evening light – and unlike on the beach, there is no crowd in front of your lens.

Seeing Railay from the water

Many visitors only ever see Railay from the beach. From the boat the peninsula shows its most impressive side: the overhanging walls of Phra Nang, climbers hanging like tiny dots on the rock, and the offshore islets backlit by the sun.

Swimming, snorkelling & relaxing at Phra Nang

Phra Nang Beach has some of the calmest swimming in the area: sheltered, gently shelving water with fine sand. Swim within the marked areas and keep clear of the longtails along the beach edge. In the morning, the overhanging cliffs at the eastern end give shade.

For snorkelling, try the rocks at the edges of the bay and, on calm days, the short swim towards the offshore rocks. Don’t expect spectacular reefs, but there are plenty of fish. Railay East, by contrast, is muddy at low tide and unsuitable for swimming.

Climbing and activities

Railay is known worldwide for sport climbing on limestone. Besides climbing, there is plenty to do:

  • Beginner climbing courses with local climbing schools
  • Swimming and snorkelling at Phra Nang Beach
  • Hike to the viewpoint (sure-footed only!)
  • Sunset at Railay West or from the boat
  • Combine with Koh Poda and the Tup sandbar

Frequently asked questions
