Krabi with kids – relaxed island days for the whole family

3 min readUpdated:

Krabi with kids is a wonderful idea: shallow sandbars, warm water, cliffs to marvel at and short boat rides to picture-book islands. At the same time, children have their own needs – sun protection, breaks, safety and the length of an outing. In this guide we share what has worked for families on our boats and which islands suit small and big explorers best.

The best islands for families

For families, short rides and shallow water matter. That is why the Poda group is ideal: Koh Poda, Chicken Island and the Tup sandbar are only 15 to 30 minutes from Ao Nang. At low tide, children can play in knee-deep water on the sandbar and walk from island to island.

Phang Nga Bay with James Bond Island and the stilt village of Koh Panyee also thrills children, and the water there is usually calm. Long trips such as Koh Rok are better suited to older children who cope well with long boat rides.

Snorkelling and swimming with children

For first snorkelling attempts, calm, shallow spots work best, such as the rocks at Koh Poda or the beaches of Koh Hong and Koh Pakbia. Children see colourful fish even in waist-deep water there. A child-sized mask, a life jacket and an adult alongside make all the difference.

For swimming, sandbars and sheltered bays are best. Avoid areas with boat traffic and watch for sharp stones and sea urchins at low tide – water shoes are a must for children.

Sun protection and heat

The tropical sun is strong, and even stronger on the water. For children, long-sleeved UV shirts, a hat with neck protection and reef-safe sunscreen are the best combination. Plan shade breaks – on the boat, under trees or in the shadow of the cliffs.

Drinking is crucial. Children often notice thirst too late, so offer water regularly, ideally with electrolytes or fresh fruit.

Planning a child-friendly boat day

With these ground rules, the day stays relaxed for everyone:

  • Half day rather than full day – four to five hours is plenty for small children
  • Start early while it is cool and the sea is calm
  • Fewer stops, longer swim breaks
  • Child-sized life jackets – check with the operator beforehand
  • Snacks, spare clothes and a towel per child
  • Motion-sickness remedy for sensitive children

Safety on board

On a speedboat, children should always be seated during the ride, ideally in the middle or at the back where the boat moves least. Ideally, children wear life jackets for the whole ride, not just when swimming.

Before booking, ask whether suitable children’s vests are on board, how much shade the boat offers and whether the crew is experienced with families. A small private boat has the advantage that the crew can really look after your children.

When the weather doesn’t play along

In wind or rain, a backup plan is worth its weight in gold. The sheltered Phang Nga Bay is often still doable. Alternatively, postpone the boat day and plan an outing on land – with a flexible private operator this is usually straightforward.

Experiences children love

Besides sandbars and snorkelling, it is often the small adventures that stick: the chicken-head rock of Chicken Island, the floating football pitch of Koh Panyee, a fish caught on a reef or squid fishing trip, or the sparkle of bioluminescent plankton in the evening.

A private boat has a big advantage with children: if someone is tired, hungry or seasick, we adapt the plan – without a whole group having to wait.
